"The holidays are a time for giving as we celebrate it with our family and friends. But let’s not forget our furry friends in the shelters and rescue centers. Operation Santa Paws, which is held from December 1st to the 24th each year, gives us the opportunity share the gift of giving and show our love for the shelter pets. Justin Rudd, who was inspired by his love for animals, started Operation Santa Paws in 2001. It began in Long Beach California but has since spread across our country and other countries and cities such as Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. His intention was to call upon all animal lovers to donate food, blankets, treats, toys, supplies and money, to help stock the shelters with much needed items. But more importantly it shows our love and compassion for those animals who do not have an opportunity to be loved or cared for, especially during the holiday season.

Sadly, statistics show that roughly 7.6 million companion animals such as cats, dogs and other domestic pets enter the shelters across our country each year. It is heartbreaking to know that these animals are there through no fault of their own. Many of them are either neglected, abused, or abandoned and though many are adopted, several will live out their lives in cages. But all deserve a loving forever home. Pets can play an important role in our lives, they give us unconditional love, they are our companions through good times and bad, and they can have an important role as a therapy/service animal. Pets are our family, and they leave an indelible mark on our hearts.

During Operation Santa Paws this December let’s give back to those less fortunate pets. We can start by donating needed supplies or money to our local shelters and rescues organizations. Organize a donation drive as many shelters post their wish list on their websites. You can donate your time by volunteering at a local shelter as they are often understaffed. Or you can foster or adopt, giving that pet a much-needed home. This is the season of giving, so please open your hearts and give to the pets in our shelter and rescues. Remember, “The love for all living creatures is the most noble attribute of man” ~ Charles Darwin. Happy holidays!"
