August 26 - NATIONAL DOG DAY - IT'S ALL IN A STORY!

HEY GUYS!🐾

Today is National Dog Day! Here is a great article that my mom wrote for her community newspaper in our honor for today. I hope that you like it, cause me and Ciena do!
As a pet parent of two beloved dogs, I am writing this month about National Dog Day, which is celebrated on August 26, each year. This special day was created by the National Dog Day Foundation to celebrate our canine companions, and to rescue dogs from abuse and homelessness. President George W. Bush, a dog owner himself, sent a letter to the foundation in support of National Dog Day and its goals. The foundation’s motto is, "Saving 10,000 Dogs - One Day at a Time".

Not only do our dogs provide us with love and companionship, but they also play an important role as service and/or therapy dogs. Trained dogs guide and assist people who have visual and hearing impairments. They aid physically disabled individuals who have mobility issues. Some dogs are trained to be medical response dogs for those with serious health conditions, such as epilepsy, diabetes or heart arrhythmias. Further, research studies prove that dogs can provide invaluable emotional support and companionship for children with autism, actually helping them with social interactions and relationships. Other dogs are be trained for life-saving search-and-rescue work, or for detection of bombs, firearms, or drugs.

Our pets here in our community may not be service or therapy dogs, but I believe that they are an important part our life. Dogs improve our mental health by reducing our stress when we stroke them and play with them; they keep us fit when we go for walks; and they provide us with a sense of security. Dogs are not judgmental-- they love us unconditionally. Their crazy antics can make us laugh and raise our spirits. I chuckle when I think of my two large dogs taking over our bed forcing us to sleep on the edge all night. I wouldn’t trade them for the world, for they bring joy to my life.

I wish all dogs could have a forever-home where they are safe and loved-- no dog should ever be homeless or abused. Let’s celebrate our loving, faithful companions on this special holiday. Let’s hope that others will be inspired to open our hearts and homes to help an abandoned dog, for so many are in need.
